#GivingTuesday Helps Us Keep a Fighting Spirit
Ashley was a previous patient. She was 25 years old and had experienced two other pregnancies. She made an adoption plan for her first child and her second baby was born after she’d married. Now, on the verge of a divorce, she was seriously considering abortion with her current pregnancy.
“I don’t have any support,” she told her Advocate. “The baby isn’t my ex-husband’s, and I really don’t want to tell my family. Although the adoption plan for my first child went well, I just don’t want to deal with all of this. I’m not emotionally or financially prepared.”
Three days later, our Resource Coordinator talked with Ashley on the phone and shared her own abortion story. She also told Ashley about the various agencies and organizations in our community that could help her, Our patient changed her mind about the abortion.
“I talked with my mother, and I talked with the father of the baby,” she said. “Both told me they would help me, that they would be there for me, and neither of them wants me to have an abortion. I did more research, and after talking to you, it only confirms what I’ve been feeling – I can’t go through with aborting this baby.”
Meeting the Abortion-Determined Woman
When an abortion-determined woman comes into our center telling us she intends to abort, rarely do we see a change of heart and mind. However, rarely doesn’t mean never. This year, nearly 30 percent of those we’ve assessed as abortion-determined HAVE chosen life. That’s one reason a fighting spirit is so necessary, and a fighting spirit is one of True Care’s core values.
Another important 2020 statistic: Half of the women who were undecided when they first came to see us chose life for their babies after seeing the ultrasound image, learning more about available resources, and being educated on their options. Even amid a pandemic and uncertainty in the world, we’ve seen God at work through our nurses and advocates. And we are grateful! Because of caring folks like you, we are here for Ashley and women like her … and we are grateful for our friends!
Pregnancy centers across the country have seen an increase in the number of abortion-determined women. COVID, job loss, relationship problems, and health concerns all play a role in their concerns and fears. At True Care this year, we’ve addressed some of these issues as best we can, thanks to our friends and donors. We’ve dispensed grocery gift cards, offered free diapers, found housing options, provided counseling referrals, and put women in touch with community agencies to assist them with rent and utility payments. We continue providing free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment, options education, and long-term programs to give them the services and support they need.
#GivingTuesday and a Fighting Spirit
#GivingTuesday is December 1, 2020, and once again True Care will participate in this international day of giving. Some local donors came together to offer a matching challenge grant of $10,000. We need to raise another $10,000 to receive the money. Will you partner with us and help True Care bring in the funds needed to obtain the matching challenge?
Our ministry needs staff and supporters who have a fighting spirit. Every day the center is open we pray, and we put on the armor of God (see Ephesians 6:10 to 18). We enter a battle for lives and souls, and as we do, we also shield ourselves mentally and emotionally with a fighting spirit. Our armor may get dinged up, we may feel jostled and jolted, but we come back the next day and the day after that, clinging to the encouragement given by the Apostle Paul: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
Help us end the year strong and start 2021 with resilience as we work to help more women like Ashley. Please give to True Care on #GivingTuesday2020! Visit our website to learn more and to donate: https://truecaregiving.net/. Or text the word “truecare” to 50155.
May we all have a fighting spirit as 2020 concludes.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
