New Study Reveals Greater Success in Abortion Pill Reversal

More than 10 years ago, Dr. George Delgado successfully stopped a chemical abortion for a woman who took the abortion pill then changed her mind – she didn’t want to go through with the abortion. Dr. Delgado reversed the abortion process using progesterone, a natural hormone. Since then, progesterone has been used in many such cases, with a success rate of about 55 percent. However, abortion advocates call Abortion Pill Reversal “a myth,” and have even discouraged medical professionals from learning about and being trained in the process.

Recently, a new case study was released by Dr. Delgado and other medical professionals. The study, published this year in Issues of Law and Medicine, involved more than 750 female patients who attempted to reverse the medical abortion process. Abortion Pill Reversal can be administered orally or through a shot. In this most recent study, success rates of 68 and 64 percent respectively were noted, an effectiveness increase of as much as 13 percent from previous studies. The abortion advocates are flat-out wrong: this protocol—often can reverse the process of a medical abortion. Abortion Pill Reversal could save the lives of nearly 2/3’s of babies whose mothers change their minds and get help.

What is Abortion Pill Reversal?

Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) is also known as Pregnancy Sustaining Progesterone Therapy (PSPT). It uses the hormone progesterone, which has been prescribed for the past 40 years to pregnant women who have a history of miscarriage. Studies show the use of progesterone in early pregnancy carries no risk of birth defects. The regimen is intense and time consuming. However, more than 400 babies have been delivered successfully with this protocol since 2007. A woman should begin the progesterone therapy within 72 hours of taking the first of the two medical abortion pills. She receives an ultrasound to be sure there is a fetal heartbeat before starting the process. She may take the progesterone as daily injections or orally with pills.

True Care and APR

True Care began offering APR last summer. Most Wyoming women travel out of state to have abortions, including medical abortions. Oftentimes the procedures are done on weekends. Although True Care is closed during the hours women receive out-of-town abortion services, our nurses are on-call Friday through Monday for APR appointments. A woman who changes her mind about the abortion she started calls our Scheduling Line to set up an appointment. The nurse then calls the potential patient back to ask some further questions and confirm the appointment. True Care is the only pregnancy center in the state of Wyoming providing this medical service – and at NO CHARGE. All our services are free and confidential, including APR.

Become Educated

Abortion remains prolific in our country, including among women in Casper. True Care has seen a large increase during the past year of patients assessed as abortion-minded or abortion-determined, those women who see abortion as their best or only option. Offering APR is vital, and so is sharing information on the process. Educate yourself on APR – you never know when you might have opportunity to share this information with a woman, whether your daughter, granddaughter, niece, friend, or a friend’s daughter. And, let them know this service, the process of reversing a medical abortion, is available, free of charge, in our own community.
