What Does the Future Hold for Roe v. Wade?
If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV
After 47 years of Roe v. Wade, with more than 60 million unborn lives taken through the act of abortion, the United States Supreme Court is scheduled to hear an important case regarding abortion.
In 2014, the state of Louisiana passed and attempted to enact a law requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within a 30-mile radius of the abortion clinic. The Supreme Court is slated to hear the case, known as June v. Gee, on March 4.
If upheld, many consider this to be “one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.” Yet, many injuries to women, even some deaths, occur at abortion clinics. Ambulances are called and other physicians must attempt to repair the physical harm caused by abortionists. Shouldn’t they be held to high standards as are other physicians?
Many states have tried to enact heartbeat bills only to see those challenged and defeated in higher courts. Some states have attempted to protect pre-born babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome from abortion – those laws have also been challenged. Even a Texas law that required abortionists to have hospital privileges was struck down by the high court. Yet, a new opportunity arises next month to hold abortionists to a higher standard than they have been in the past.
As more states seek to impose protections on the unborn, we in the pro-life community can pray for the states trying to find ways to safeguard pre-born children from the horror of abortion … and women from suffering physically and emotionally from that decision. Studies show the unborn feel pain. Other studies show numerous women also experience pain from abortion – not just physically, but emotionally. We can pray for both the unborn and the women who see abortion as their only option. We can also pray for the Supreme Court justices and the Louisiana attorneys as they present their case, that God’s spirit would guide them all into truth and provide them with strength.
The spring 40 Days for Life campaign is set to begin later this month, on February 26, prior to the Supreme Court hearing of the Louisiana case. Let us take time to present our pleas before the Lord of Life. For He alone can change hearts and minds and instill truth to human hearts and souls. The future of Roe v. Wade may rest in what transpires during these next few months, and through our prayers we can stand on the front lines of this life and death battle.
